Residential architecture in Wimbledon
Host Architecture is a design-led practice working on extensions, refurbishments and carefully considered alterations to homes across Wimbledon and South West London.
Making better use of the home you already have
Residential projects are rarely just about creating more space. They are often an opportunity to reconsider how a home works, improve natural light, strengthen the relationship with the garden and resolve changes that have accumulated over time.
Our work ranges from focused alterations and extensions to substantial whole-house refurbishments. In each case, the aim is to develop a clear architectural response to the existing building, the client's priorities and the practical constraints of budget, planning and construction.
We are interested in interventions that feel specific to the property, rather than applying a standard solution. This may mean retaining and repairing existing character, introducing a carefully detailed contemporary addition, or reorganising the plan so that the house works more effectively for everyday family life.
Working with Wimbledon’s varied architectural character
Wimbledon contains an unusually varied mix of homes, from Victorian and Edwardian terraces to larger detached houses, post-war properties and historic buildings around the Village and Common.
Many projects are also shaped by conservation area designations, local listing, Article 4 Directions or other planning constraints. These do not prevent thoughtful change, but they do require proposals to respond carefully to the character of the building, the street and the wider setting.
We regularly work with Merton's planning requirements and prepare the drawings, design statements and supporting information needed to explain the architectural reasoning behind a proposal. Our approach is to address planning considerations from the outset, rather than treating them as a separate exercise once the design has been developed.

From early ideas through to construction
We can support residential projects from the initial assessment of a property through planning, technical design, tender and construction. The extent of our appointment can be tailored to the needs of the project, but continuity between the design and delivery stages is central to how we work.
Feasibility and brief
Understanding the property, the client's priorities, likely planning constraints and the appropriate scope of work.
Design and planning
Developing a coherent architectural proposal and preparing the information required for planning or listed building consent.
Technical design
Coordinating structure, building regulations, materials, services and construction details before work begins on site.
Construction
Supporting the client through tender and construction, helping to maintain design quality and resolve issues as the building develops.
Architect-led and personally involved
Host is a small RIBA Chartered Practice based in South West London. Projects are architect-led throughout, allowing the early design thinking, technical decisions and work on site to remain closely connected.
We combine design ambition with a practical understanding of existing buildings, construction and cost. The result should feel considered and distinctive, but also buildable, durable and appropriate to the client's long-term plans for the property.
